In the wintertime it is imperative that you become an avid user of your electronics; the key to finding fish is in the details on your graph and searching is the key. Never in the history of the bass fishing world have we had more detail to search from than we have today. Lowrance electronics is so advanced in the picture you get while scanning the bottom that finding fish is now an art that requires you to learn to use today’s technology. Being proficient is not an option anymore it’s a requirement, and if you take it seriously enough you can be a great winter fisherman.
The key is finding and understanding what your seeing, random arches, grass, rock, humps, sharp drops all give you keys as to where the fish are hiding and how to fish them. Understanding what your seeing, gathering up the details all lead you to the next bite. As an example, bass position sometimes along drops, many times there on the first drop as you work down the water column. Visualizing where they are positioned can be the key to getting into the fish and finding that winning bag. If the bass are along a 10 ft. drop then there is a key there that you must use to your advantage, look at other 10 ft. drops see if it’s a pattern then start to fish the drop that you found them gathering around. Once you get a bite then work that area thoroughly then use it as a pattern especially if you caught more than one fish off that 10 ft. drop. I believe that one fish is a bite, two fish is caught is a good sign and three fish caught is a pattern.
Finding the clues is the key and in the winter the clues may be all you have to go bye. Keys come in many forms, water clarity is the water clear or dirty how far down can you see. Look around for bait fish moving in the area, is there birds flying and diving for food near bye, is there active bass feeding around the area you located; all these tell you if your in the right area or not and if you are observant you will find the winter bass.
With the up-coming Bassmaster classic directly in front of us this up-coming week; fishing on Guntersville is strong and should lead to some great 5 fish sacks at weigh-in. Yes, the change in weather affected the fishing as it started out strong in the beginning of the week and ended a little tougher as the week ended. This is typical February, but fishing is good, size is good, and numbers are typical for winter.
We stuck to our traditional February baits, SPRO Aruka shad rattle baits, SPRO rock crawlers, Picasso Shock Blades, Missile bait “48” stick baits and Tight-Line swim jigs. The bass are on the move once again you have to cover water until you get a bite then narrow down to the active area and cover it thoroughly making sure you take advantage of the fish grouping up that is typical in the winter.

Well a cold front came through and it did effect the fish a little. We still were able to put 24 in the boat and some nice ones as well ,we had one more good one that just came unbuttoned with me leaning over the side ready to lip her, don't really don't know what happened just come unbuttoned, we should have had a nice bag, still decent but not what it could have been. We caught fish from the beginning for a couple hours and then things slowed down, after a few hours of dead time we finally started picking one up here and there. We caught our fish in water 2 to 5 feet on the picasso shock blade pro and plastics. I have 5 or 6 days left in may and booking for June and July if you are interested in getting around some of these fish give me a call and let's go fishing.
Because of tournament reschedule, I now have April 15th,16th,and 17th open if you are interested in getting out and chasing some bass give me a call.
Well after a day off (working on the farm)and a day with 2 electronic trips, I finally got to put a rod back in my hand. We started out catching fish and we ended up with one on the last cast. We did have some slow times in between but we did put 37 bass in the boat with a few nice ones, just not any giants. We had two that was over 4.5 and pushing the 5 pound mark but didn't quite make it, but that didn't stop us from having a pretty good day. We had to slow down again catching our fish on the picasso shock blade pro and plastics in water 3 to 5 feet deep. Lake Guntersville is starting to heat up and there are more and more fish showing up everywhere. The fish are at all stages right now so you can catch fish several different ways. May is filling up really fast and I am booking trips for June and July which is some of the best fishing of the year. If you are interested in getting around some of these bass give me a call and let's go fishing.
By the way this little guy was ready to go back before he got out of the boat we had a blast.
Ok today started off slow and after hitting a few spots that fish had left we decided to switch techniques all together, I knew it was coming but just didn't want to give up what I was doing. We ended up putting a pattern together and slowing down, but maybe not as slow as a friend of mine you know who you are , but really slow and things started coming together. We ended up catching over 20 fish and around 20 pounds with our best 5. I tell you the Abu Garcia fantasista spinning rod with the MGX spinning reel is one fine set up and done a nice job on this bug eyed beauty in the grass. We caught all of our fish on plastics in water 2 to 5 feet. If you are interested in getting around some of these fish give me a call and let's go fishing.
Well,I am ready for these fish to start acting like they should. I mean when you get in water 65 degrees this time of year it should be easy but it's not. Well maybe there just not doing what I expect ,we started off really good this morning catching good average size fish and a couple nice ones ,even an ole bug eyed beauty. We caught fish in water from 2 to 6 feet deep on plastics, scottsboro tackle Company 4.5 inch swimbait and ole faithful the picasso shock blade pro. We had a pretty good 5 fish limit with our biggest weighing 6 pounds I guess it may have been better than I thought, I just know what should be happening and it's not, but any day now things should get really good. I have some days available in may and booking for June and July if you are interested in getting around some of these fish give me a call and let's go fishing.
Well today was a wet day to say the least. We didn't move around as much because of the rain, it doesn't feel that good slapping you in the face. The numbers were down a little because we didn't move around but we still managed a couple of decent ones. We caught our fish on plastics and the picasso shock blade pro they just keep eating this thing. We were fishing water 3 to 10 feet and rising. I still have some days available in may and booking for June if you are interested in getting around some of these bass give me a call and let's go fishing.
Not all fish are in deeper water during the summer. The bass have been chomping the V&M Baits Pulse Swim Jig! It has a subtle yet alluring action that the bass seem to not be able to resist. This bait just flat out catches them.
Hope everyone is having a safe and fun time on the water this weekend!
We had a great time Matt. Got my first ever grandslam. To top it off it was my first ever spotted bass and first ever smallmouth witch was a 3lb Chunk. Can't wait to come back. Thanks ... See MoreSee Less
